Associate Professor Dou Chao, Director of the Doctoral Programme of the School, prepared and organized the event. The PhD Research Ability Enhancement Programme is a special programme carried out by the School to improve the research ability of PhD students, which is carried out in the form of ‘Lecture + Tutoring’, covering all the core processes of academic research, with one session in each academic year, and each session comprising a number of lectures covering multiple specialties, including topic selection, literature review, research design, methodology and techniques, paper writing, publication submission, and writing skills. Each session consists of several lectures covering various professional directions, including topics such as research topic selection, literature review, research design, methodology and technology, dissertation writing, dissertation submission and revision.

This lecture was hosted by Associate Professor Dou Chao, Director of the PhD Programme of the School. Professor Dou gave a brief introduction to the speaker, Assistant Professor JI Yueting. JI Yueting received her Ph.D. in Economics from Renmin University of China (RUC). Her research areas are Human Resource Management (HRM) and Organizational Behaviour (OB), and she has a wealth of research experience in the areas of leadership, employee well-being, online leisure, career, and labour relations.

In recent years, Professor JI has published many papers in top journals such as Journal of Applied Psychology.

With the theme of cooperation and publication in top journals, Assistant Professor JI Yueting explained how to efficiently promote academic research and publication by focusing on key aspects such as research topic selection, research design, paper writing and submission revision. Professor JI started from the core elements of research topic selection, focusing on the importance of topic selection, novelty, curiosity, scope of applicability, and practicality/activity, and deeply analysed the multi-dimensional aspects of topic contribution, including theoretical, practical, empirical and methodological contributions, inspiring doctoral students to find research inspiration and explore potential problems from literature reviews and special issues of top journals. In the section on research design, the guest speaker pointed out the key role of methodological choices on the credibility (internal validity) and scope of applicability (external validity) of the research results, and combined with abundant examples, shared hands-on experience in the use of multiple research methods in conjunction with each other as well as the transparency of research design. Regarding paper writing, Assistant Professor JI Yueting reminded everyone to pay attention to writing logic, journal style and collaborative team. During the submission and revision session, Assistant Professor JI Yueting talked in detail about the techniques of dealing with multiple rounds of revisions based on her own experience of publishing in top journals, and emphasised the importance of responding to the reviewers' comments in a comprehensive manner and thinking differently.

In this seminar, Assistant Professor JI Yueting's wonderful sharing made the doctoral students deeply understand the rigorous attitude and innovative thinking required to carry out high-quality academic research, and at the same time stimulated their in-depth thinking on the selection of scientific research topics, research methodology and revision of thesis, etc. The guest speakers combined their own experience of top journal publication with their own experience of top journal revision. The guest speakers provided participants with many practical suggestions based on their own topical publication experiences, which not only inspired students to think about how to choose a contributing research topic from a multi-dimensional perspective, but also practically helped them to clarify the key steps of scientific research. Through this series of lectures, the School further promoted the scientific research ability of doctoral students, helped them establish a scientific and rigorous academic attitude, consolidated a solid foundation for future academic development, and also injected new vitality into the academic atmosphere of the School.
